Learning unit contents

This course represents the second part of the specific physical education teachers education. Built on research data in sport pedagogy, practical examples and teachers' evidences, it provides useful information to students which will help them to become more effective. That part is more focused on teaching approaches to be implemented in secondary schools for several sports and specific teaching contexts. Teaching practice is organised to provide the largest possible teaching experience to the students. Students work with one class of a master teacher. They have two lessons per week and are regularly supervised by staff members. At the end of the teaching practice, they have teach during two full weeks. Activities are organised in order to help students to make their own analysis of their teaching. At school, PE teachers can not limit their activity to teaching the content. They are involved in several other tasks. Students must be prepared to these.

Courses and exercises

This course represents the second part of the specific physical education teachers education. Build on research data in sport pedagogy, practical examples and teachers' evidences, it provides useful information to students which will help them to become more effective.
That part is more focused on teaching approaches to be applied in secondary schools for several sports and specific teaching contexts.

Teaching practice

Teaching practice is organised to provide the largest possible teaching experience to the students and to let them try to teach as if they would have a replacement of two weeks. Specific rules are available on myULiège.

Reflexive practice

Activities are organised in order to help students to make their own analysis of their teaching.

Extra-scholar teaching activities

At school, PE teachers can not limit their activity to teaching the content. They are involved in several other tasks. Students must be prepared to these.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Objectives are:

  • To allow students to become aware about the place of PE in secondary school.
  • To provide information about PE teachers' responsabilities.
  • To illustrate pedagogical principles to apply in secondary school.
  • To provide a practical experience to the students.
To develop a reflexive and positive attitude toward teaching. To provide to students opportunities to develop their experience in teaching and to acquire the competencies. To develop self-analysis and development of solutions to the problems encountered during lessons. To illustrate tasks in which PE teachers have to be involved to participate to the life of their school.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Sessions are planned in order to have a theoretical lesson together with a practical seminar or exercise. In that way, students can better understand how to apply the theory. Moreover, practical exercises are organised in a natural context with the collaboration of a secondary level school.
Students work with a real class in a secondaty school. Two lessons per week. They receive information from their master teacher and are regularly supervised by the staff members.

Sessions are planned in order to have a theoretical lesson together with a practical seminar or exercise. In that way, students can better understand how to apply the theory. Moreover, practical exercises are organised in a natural context with the collaboration of a secondary level school.

Teaching practice

Students work with a real class in a secondaty school. Two lessons per week. They receive information from their master teacher and are regularly supervised by the staff members.
They finish their teaching experience by a period corresponding to a full-time job in a school (one or two weeks).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Activities are organised on Wednesday. They begin with a theoretical session while seminars, exercises and practical teaching are planned during the remaining part of the day.
The planning of the lessons is provided to students during the first meeting.
It is described during the first meeting. Students receive the list of the master teachers and have to contact one of them and plan their teaching activities. Modalities are presented and analysed during the introductory course.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of this part focused on the content taught during the second semester.
Theory is assessed through a written exam (open questions where students have to explain how they would apply theory in specific situations). An oral exam is organised. It is compulsory for students who did not achieve at the written part. Others are free to present or not.
Assessment of the practical part is focused on involvement in seminars and execises, quality of the written works done during the semestre and quality of teaching experiences. Any failure in a part of the course can bring a failure for the whole unit.
Information about assessment is provided during the first meeting.
Teaching practice is assessed continously. A specific lesson is assessed at the end of the teaching practice period. Students receive a standarized assessement grid and are invited to use it for self-assessment during the whole period.
It lays mainly on the quality of the analysis and reflexions which are produced.
