Learning unit contents

Ethnographic practice became institutionalised in the 20th century and has undergone many new developments in the 60ies. Mainly based on an extended immersion, fieldwork can only be understood in the light of the history of anthropology (from pre-ethnology to the present day), its developments and the controversies it has aroused and continues to arouse today. This course aims to provide the broad outline of an epistemological framework of ethnographic practice in anthropology based on texts and examples as well as on individual experimentation (practical exercises, fieldwork, fieldwork diary, construction of a research question, etc.).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Students will acquire a critical understanding of past and contemporary debates and controversies regarding ethnographic practice both inside and outside the discipline. Students will also become familiar with the requirements and practicalities of personal methodological, ethical and epistemological exploration through practical exercises and an ethnographic fieldwork.
