Course contents :

| The course is different form other courses, since it tries to transmit a know-how. At the end of the course, the student will be able to perform a literature searching and retrieval procedure in the biomedical area.
There is no theory to learn: it is its application that matters. The acquired competencies will be useful all throughout the degree, and specifically during the PBL sessions (Problem-Based Learning) or the dissertation or thesis writing, but also later throughout the graduate's career.
The course focuses the principles and methods of scientific communication, documentary research, critical approach of biomedical information (including the Internet resources). |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| After completing the course, students will have more autonomy, be able to use critically the various resources in libraries, understand and apply the principles of scientific communication. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| Ability to use a PC, send emails and browse the Web. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

| The course is based on practical exercises (individual or in group) to be carried out at home or in a computer room.. They progressively help the student to acquire the necessary autonomy in the area of documentary research and critical reading of scientific information. |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

| The course focuses on the theoretical and technical aspects of the following topics: Scientific communication - Publication types: definition and structure of research and summary articles - Critical reading of scientific tables, graphs, and schemas - Rules of written and oral communication
Documentary research - Document types: dictionaries, encyclopedias, monographs, periodicals, summary works - Research tools: tables of contents, index, catalogs, bibliographies - Bibliographic databases: using Medline via PubMed
Medical information on the Web - Specialized search engines and portals - Evaluation of Web sites
An online course has been created in order to guide the student all along the learning process. Only 3 ex cathedra sessions (beginning, middle and end of the quarter) have been maintained (3 x 2 hours). There is a fourth session, during which the students will explore the Bibliothèque des Sciences de la Vie (CHU, B-35). The remainder of the course consists in individual and group assignments, which enable discovery through exploratrion and the progressive acquisition of competencies. |

Assessment methods and criteria :

| The assessment is based on the practical exercises carried out over the year and a multiple-choice exam during the exam session. As applicable, the grade will be associated with the grade obtained in the English course. |
