Learning unit contents

The course provides a broad and introductory approach to the various surveying practices for the architect.

The course focuses on the methods for obtaining a basic plan of an intervention context. The course is structured according to the techniques and materials to be used. Particular attention will be paid to the interpretation and coherence of the results obtained during the surveys.
 
The course deals with the measurement of angles and distances, the use of classical surveying instruments such as levels, theodolites and total stations.

It also covers the notions of surveying (plan and elevation), levelling and layout.

The course also deals with the use of geographical reference data for smaller scale work.

 

The course develops the numeric strategic axis of the faculty.

 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the class, the student will be able to:

  • manage the basic measuring instruments of the topographer;
  • make a survey to map the elements;
  • master the vocabulary allowing diaglogue and understanding with the professional environment of the surveyor;
  • select the appropriate tool for setting up a data acquisition mission;
  • understand the notion of error - accuracy of a statement
  • make a plan / elevation based on a survey
  • understand the principle of cartographic projection

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic trigonometry :
Relationships in a right-angled triangle.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theory which includes:

  • Theoretical concepts
  • Description of survey methods
  • Description of instruments and demonstrations.
  • Planimetry
  • Altimetry
  • Survey
  • Relief representation
  • Cartographic construction
Practical (on-site survey exercises) which include 
  •  Reminder of handling (in the classroom)
  • Field survey exercises
  •  Critical analysis of the results obtained  

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

  Compulsory attendance at theoretical courses in order to have the minimum concepts for handling TP instruments safely. Theoretical classes are taught ex-cathedra with certain exercises performed during the sessions.
The practical courses are delivered in small groups. During the sessions, the student manipulates the survey instruments.
Mediation and remediation proposed during optional additional sessions.

Additional information:

Evaluation of the theoretical part (50% of the final grade).

  • Theoretical examination with open questions
  • Theoretical questions and practical exercises to be performed
 
Evaluation of the practical part (50% of the final grade).
  • Evaluation based on a report made after the field exercises.
  • A report will be given after each practical exercise.
  • The mark awarded will be individual based on continuous assessment  
 
If the student fails the examination in the first session and the practical training mark is higher than 10/20, he/she keeps his/her mark for the second session. If the mark of the practical work is lower than 10/20, the student will have additional questions during the written exam.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

No survey instrument wil be available for students that did not attend to theorical class.
The goups of practicals are defined during the first class.
It is required to remain in the same group during all the course.
Be aware of being dress in consequence of the weather (outside practicals).
