Learning unit contents

The "contextualisation - a shared function" teaching unit in Q4 is an architectural project workshop, the aim of which is to implement a "shared function" (community facilities and adjoining housing) on an existing site. Students will be required to manipulate and articulate the various tools and prerequisites taught during their training.

The course content focuses on the following themes:

- implementing a given programme in a real, pre-existing built and/or landscape context

- linking together several functions/programmes of different sizes and scales (large, medium, small)

- articulating different thresholds between private / communal / public

- designing the surroundings (outdoor spaces, public spaces, private spaces, etc.)

The workshop will take place in three stages:
TIME 1 - Sharing experience, understanding the context and the programme, implementation scenarios

TIME 2 - Designing and developing a project

TIME 3 - Materialisation and synthesis

The quality of the graphic documents produced is a very important concern throughout the teaching unit, through complete, explicit and shareable documents, by all appropriate means and respecting the representation codes.

The final documents will be drawn up at different scales (from layout to materialization) but the preferred scale will be 1:50 - all plans and sections will be at this scale.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of each stage (« time »), the student will be able to :

TIME 1 - Sharing experience, understanding the context and programme, implementation scenarios

- Understanding a (pre-)existing context/site (town, district, street, plot of land, etc.)

- Collectively sharing the knowledge acquired about the context

- Understand a given programme, document it using references

- Make a place your own, identify opportunities for setting up there;

- Explore possible layouts, volumes and "postures".
- Explore different methods of representation: diagrams, sketches, scale models, axonometry, collages, photos, etc.

TIME 2 - Designing and developing a project

- Develop the proposed layout in relation to the given programme
- Confront the layout with the given programme; go back and forth between the scale of the context and the scale of the programme

- Articulating individual and collective, interior and exterior spaces

- Compose interior and exterior spaces, paying particular attention to transitions and status (private, collective, connection to the public)

- Shaping functions / a programme: interpretation, ergonomics, sizing, organisation

- Implementing structural elements: small to medium spans

- Defining an envelope: exploring expressions in relation to the concept and the site (volumes)

- (Re)presenting and communicating the project: drawings (layout, plans, cross-sections, elevations), model(s), an "expressive document" (axonometry, cross-section-perspective, etc.), oral presentation, etc.

TIME 3 - Materialization and synthesis

- Synthesise the various constraints of the brief (context, programme, location, articulation of spaces, composition of spaces, structural materialisation, expression of the envelope, etc.).

- Extend the design of the project and its materiality: implementation in terms of materials, construction, expression, façade composition, atmosphere, etc.

- focus on a significant area of the current project in terms of its material, constructive and expressive characteristics
- (Re)presentation and full communication of the project: drawings (relationship to context, siting and relationship to surroundings, floor plans, sections, elevations at 1:50 scale), model(s), expressive document, etc.; oral presentation to the jury.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

LECTURE :

in audience, by teachers or guests
The documents presented and used during the course are available online on eCampus. Course topics are covered in the form of workshops and presentations to the whole class. They are supported by presentations (slideshows, videos, websites), written documents and discussions available on eCampus. Before each workshop, students read the various documents and presentations available on eCampus.

WORKSHOP SESSION :
Students are divided into small groups; each group is supervised by a teacher, who pairs up at certain stages of the project. The allocation of groups and teachers changes from one term to the next, in order to present different points of view. Juries and round tables will be held regularly throughout the term to provide feedback on the progress of the projects. These work sessions will take place in a workshop, in premises defined at the beginning of the year.

SITE VISIT :
A compulsory site visit is planned as part of the workshop so that students can get a feel for the context in which the project will be implemented (sketches, drawings, photos, etc.). Students are encouraged to physically return to the site during the four-month term (change of season, different light, confrontation of their project with reality, etc.).

STUDY TRIP :
A study trip abroad will be organised during the term. The trip will provide an opportunity to visit buildings and programmes (housing, facilities) related to the theme of the workshop. Some exercises will be linked to the trip (note-taking, drawings, photo montage, etc.). Students who are unable to attend the trip will be required to carry out project visits. The study trip is seen as a way of bringing people together and gaining a better understanding of reference projects: it should be seen as a learning tool in its own right.

WORKSHOP NOTEBOOK :
Description :
The workshop notebook is a tool developed by the student to keep track of the various feedbacks received session after session.

This tool can be used by the teacher at each session and/or at the time of the jury.

The specific procedures for each workshop, relating to its use/manipulation and its form, will be provided later by the teachers. Each workshop is likely to vary the expectations of the notebook. The content of the notebook is not assessed, but it forms part of the completion of the documents expected throughout the semester period.

Objectives.

- To develop the student's awareness of exchanges with teachers (note-taking habits, taking responsibility).
- Build up a record of the learning process and the reflections carried out.
- Give a personal and dynamic meaning to learning.
- Enable constructive exchanges with the teacher(s).

It records (at least) :

- The material (external representations) used by the student (photograph of the table/board) at the end of each workshop session.
- The nature of the student's reflections following an exchange with the teacher(s).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Additional information:

Student obligations :

Workshop attendance :
In the interests of learning, attendance at workshops is compulsory. Each teacher will take the attendance of the group of students assigned to him/her.

Teachers will certify student attendance at the end of individual or group discussions. A student who has attended a workshop but has not followed the discussions is not considered to be "present". In the event of special circumstances (e.g. a student has to leave the workshop before the end of the day for valid and justifiable reasons), the student must coordinate with the teacher(s) in order to benefit from the exchanges.

Procedures in the event of absence from the workshop :
All absences must be justified.
In the event of absence, students must :

- Notify the referent teacher by e-mail, with a copy to the course coordinator in charge of recording absences.

- Update themselves for the next workshop and consult the weekly information provided by the teachers via the official course channels (e.g. e-mail, eCampus, Miro, etc).

- Submit proof of attendance as soon as possible, by e-mail, to the person in charge appointed by the supervisory team.

Access to the final assessment is conditional on 80% attendance. If the student exceeds 20% attendance through unjustified absences, access to the final assessment will be refused. The student will receive a mark of "0".

In the case of justified and admissible absences, access to the final assessment of the term is conditional on 50% attendance. Prolonged justified absences will be discussed between the student, the class teachers and, where appropriate, the relevant departments.

Obligations within the workshop :
All students must bring their work to the workshop. This will be communicated at the end of each workshop session or via the official course channels predefined by the teachers (e.g. e-mail, eCampus, Miro, etc).
Students who fail to comply with this condition may be refused access to the teacher(s).

Students must ensure that the premises are kept clean and tidy. At the end of the day, the premises must be returned to the state in which they were found at the beginning of the session and in a state that allows other users to use them properly. Waste management and sorting are essential in the workshop. Bins for cardboard/paper, non-recyclable waste and PMC are provided in each room.

Supervision methods:

Student support will be provided either by a group of teachers or by a single referent teacher, depending on the periods in the calendar.

Continuity between the content of the different teaching units will be ensured by subject referent teachers (ST, SH, EE);

Certain activities and targeted practical and support sessions will be accompanied by student monitors.

SINGLE SESSION COURSE

Types of evaluations :

Assessments can take several forms which can be combined:

  • Formative: feedback from the teacher(s) on the production of one or more weeks. This assessment allows the student to progress but does not play a part in the construction of the mark;
  • Continuous: individual assessment against explicit criteria defined by the supervisory team;
  • Summative: marks awarded for different assessment tools and moments which are then summed up to form an overall mark;
  • Certificative: marks awarded for work handed in and presented orally to a jury and which sanction the acquisition of learning.
In the context of this course the assessment is summative and integrates both certificative and continuous assessments.

Weighting :

The weighting of the different assessments will be set out at the beginning of each term in the statement and posted on e-campus.

Criteria :

The evaluation criteria will be transmitted in advance to each submission. ?Each assessment will nevertheless include the following general criteria

  • quality of graphic, oral and textual communication,
  • Completeness and care of the expected documents; incompleteness or lack of care may be a reason for non-acceptance of the work, ?????
Obligations of the student for exams and examinations:
Students are required to present themselves on the day of the jury or a presentation with the expected and complete documents. If the documents are not handed in, the student must notify the coordinator(s) by e-mail.
Teachers will notify students of any failure to submit the required documents at the assessment stage. These shortcomings will influence the grade awarded.

Assessment procedures
The panels are constituted as follows:
- Members of the course management team
- Internal members (faculty members)
- External members (teachers from other faculties, architects, resource persons, etc.)
?
Jury pv's :
At the end of each term, the teachers fill in a report. These record
- The names of the members of the jury
- The mark awarded to the student
- The assessment criteria and their evaluation
- the comments made by the jury to justify the grade (in the case of failure only).

Arrangements in the event of absence or lateness for examinations or juries
In the case of a certificate-based assessment, an unjustified late submission or absence is penalised by non-receipt of the work and a mark of "0". A one-off absence for good reason does not absolve the student from submitting the expected work.

In the event that the student is unable to be present on the day and at the time of a certification exam, the following protocol must be followed:
- Notify the teacher responsible for his/her group and the course coordinator(s) by e-mail before the date and time of the submission.
- Hand in the work (in the state it is in) by a third party, on the day, at the time and in the place specified. AND, transmit the documents in digital form (including scans and/or photos) via the Miro and/or eCampus platform before the date and time of submission.
- Provide proof of the day of absence, no later than the day after the test, to the administration department: administration.archi@uliege.be with an email copy to the coordinator(s).

Students who, for justified reasons, are unable to attend an intermediate or final examination must follow the same procedures as outlined above (with a digital copy via the official channels of the course, email, eCampus if necessary).

If a student is late for or absent from an intermediate or final jury without justification, the work will not be accepted. The student will receive a mark of "0".

If, despite an absence, the work has been submitted, the members of the jury will deliberate on whether or not the documents are admissible, and on any arrangements they consider necessary for their examination. If the documents are admissible, the work will be assessed on the basis of the documents as they stand, without the presence of the student.
