Learning unit contents

The activities in this design studio are a synergy between sustainability and circular design theory and their integration into an architectural design project. This approach allows us to address issues of conceptual coherence, and spatial and expressive design while exploring simultaneously the possibilities for sustainability as an essential element for the design; which will become an important and essential task in the field of architecture. The studio focuses in particular on studying the interaction between questions of density, mixed functions, and quality of life in buildings, while in the meantime integrating the principles of bioclimatic architecture. This includes the development of construction details in accordance with a basic understanding of sustainable buildings concerning energy, water, and materials. The design exercise is based on a study of solutions adapted to the development of a sustainable and circular school or kindergarten. They are successively developed throughout the different scales from the urban form, the ensemble of buildings, the building itself, and its envelope and materials.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course the student should be capable of:

  • To analyze issues specific to the transformation of North European schools or kindergartens with a perspective of sustainable regenerative.
  • To explore specific topics through the projects (energy, water, materials) by studying and seeking their contribution to architecture in a sustainable city
  • To create - in a creative and rigorous way - a coherent architectural design at different intervention scales (urban form, building  ensemble, building, and envelope)
  • To identify the adequate scales for developing an architectural project in its different design phases
  • To design a constructive scenario until the significant constructional details
  • To be able to defend an architectural project, orally and written, the design, the visualization, and a scale model.
  • To transpose the theoretical contributions in the development of a project.
Other Competences

To organize and coordinate a team for developing, ... and making a working plan.

  • To be able to access appropriate information sources and evaluate their value
  • Persevere despite difficulties or initial errors to find an optimal solution
  • To document and communicate a project
  • To plan activities in a way that makes the best use of the set time frame.
