Learning unit contents

The course considers the range of strategies that have been developed historically and are currently in use for intervention in existing buildings. It is developed at two levels:
- a historical, theoretical and conceptual approach (introductory lectures and systematic examination of strategies), aimed at mastering the terminology of intervention and acquiring the analytical tools necessary for the critical study of projects;

- detailed examination of specific case studies or thematic issues (mostly about modern heritage) allowing the application of these terminological and critical skills.

The issues of sustainability, art and society are transversal to the different themes. The question of digital technology is incidentally approached as a tool in the service of the heritage project.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

• knowledge of the basic concepts and principles that underpinned interventions on existing buildings in history;
• knowledge of current debates on interventions on existing buildings;
• development of a critical spirit towards the current and past practices of adaptive reuse;
• introduction to the master courses in the field of adaptive reuse. 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The theory and history of architecture courses of the baccalaureate cycle.
