Learning unit contents

This course provides a summary of the Plant & Animal Biology courses on the schedule of blocs 1 & 2 of the studies of Bachelor in Biology. The aim is to provide basic knowledge to students who followed a different cursus so that they are able to understand the other Biology courses on their program.

Animal

This course presents an overview of the main animal taxa, with emphasis on evolution, phylogeny and biodiversity. Special attention will be devoted on compared anatomy, functional adaptations, evolutive characters and interactions with the environment.

Plant Biology

The course consists in two main parts.
Part one is based on 3 keywords (the title of the course) : 'Biology', 'Plant', 'Pluricellular'. These words are used as a guideline to explain the specific traits of plant cells, tissues, and organs. Functional aspects are included such as photosynthesis. Part two describes important groups such as algae, mosses, ferns, gymnosperms and angiosperms. Special emphasis is laid on evolutionary aspects of vegetative organisms and reproduction.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of this course is to provide basic knowledge in Biology, so that students who are registered in Master BBMC or BOE but have a transition program to follow can understand the complementary courses.

Animal

After taking this class, you'll be able to:

  • Understand zoology-associated terminology.
  • Describe main systematic groups, their anatomy, their characteristics and the links allowing to organize them in relation to each other.
  • Understand relationships between studied organisms and their environment.

Plant Biology

The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge in plant biology, so that students can understand the course of Plant Physiology that is on their schedule for the second quadrimestre.

For this course to be profitable, it is important that you master the language in which it will be given (French).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures and practicals

Animal

The theoretical part will consist in ex cathedra lectures, complemented as often as possible by other media or material (video, numerical resources, etc.).

Practical work will illustrate in a concrete way important aspects of the theoretical course, through observation using a binocular microscope, dissection, and observation of microscope slides (whole colored small animals or histological sections), but also through commented visits. Attendance to practical work sessions is mandatory. They are organized in 4 sessions of one afternoon each. They tackle 1) Annelids, 2) Animal diversity, 3) Arthropods, and 4) Vertebrates.

Plant Biology

Courses are given ex cathedra.

Practicals are organised in 4 thematic half-days on photosynthesis, plant anatomy and reproduction.

Additional information:

In order to maximize and facilitate interactions between students and teachers, all sections of the course will be organized in person as long as it remains possible. If required by the circumstances (e.g. sanitary situation), some parts will be taught remotely. In this case, recordings will be shared with the students, and specific time slots will be dedicated to discussion.

Plant Biology

Slides and notes can be downloaded from eCampus. Books are recommended but not compulsory. A few of them can be obtained from the teacher.

The final note is the mean of the cotations obtained in the 'Plant' and 'Animal' parts, providing that a minimum of 8/20 has been obtained in each part.

Additional information:

The final exam has a practical and a theoretical part. The theoretical exam will be written. The practical exam will be oral, and its final grade will take into account the year's work during the practical sessions. The theoretical exam will represent 60% of the global grade, and the practical exam the remaining 40%.

Practicals are evaluated based on homeworks that students have to upload on eCampus. Practicals are taken into account for 25% of the final note.

 

Students who did not attend the practicals are not admitted to the exam.
