Learning unit contents

Symbiotic relationships are ubiquitous within the living world. They play a major role in evolutionary and ecological processes and have shaped our biosphere as we know it today. This introductory course aims to describe symbiotic interactions in Animals. It is organized as follows:

  • Introduction to symbioses
  • Involvement of symbioses in nutrition and other functions
  • Evolution and symbioses
  • Symbiosis and bioluminescence
  • The animalgae
  • The importance of microbiomes
  • ...

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will possess a better understanding of various symbiotic-like interactions in Animals. They will also apprehend better some biological and environmental parameters needed to maintain a symbiotic relationship and the consequences of environmental changes on symbioses. They will know more about the importance of symbiotic relationships in evolutionary processes and the functioning of the biosphere. In addition, students will also practice reading and speaking in English.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

bachelier en sciences

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

In addition to lectures some seminars given by students will be included in the general discussion on symbiotic relationships.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Additional information:

There will be oral presentations and discussions given with and by students attending the course. Participation in the course is important to develop thematic discussions.

Recommended or required readings

Powerpoint presentations used for lectures will be given to students. Additional content (scientific articles, book chapters) will also be made available on the course's e-campus space.

Written work / report

Additional information:

The evaluation will be based on a bibliographic synthesis (± 4 pages) and a "Powerpoint" presentation (15 min). The topic of the synthesis will be chosen by the student. It must :

  • Relate to a symbiotic relationship (in the broad sense) involving at least one animal species or to a biological phenomenon made possible by a symbiotic relationship with an animal.
  • Not have been presented during the lectures.
  • Be validated beforehand by the teacher.

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The schedule for the lectures is defined in consultation with the students. In this respect, a survey will be carried out by the students registered at the beginning of the year.
