Learning unit contents

To complete the required theoretical concepts with a view to instrumental analysis in the pharmaceutical field.
To give students the necessary knowledge to use the following methods and skills:
- Introduction to separative techniques (Separation by change of state, distillation, rectification; fundamental chromatographic parameters).
- Thin Layer Chromatography, Gas Chromatography, High-performance Liquid Chromatography and Supercritical Fluid Chromatography.
- Capillary electrophoresis: principal characteristics of CE; Principle of electrophoresis, theory, electrophoretic mobility, electro-osmotic flow, apparatus.
- Quality control of radiopharmaceuticals
Seminars linked with the theoretical course of Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry are also organized. The objective of these ones is to analyze some scientific publications in the analytical field in order to teach students to highlight rapidly relevant and useful information. These seminars allow to study the general structure of scientific publications and to teach how to reference correctly these publications.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To build on the required theoretical concepts with a view to instrumental analysis, in particular complete student training in the use of separation methods. To deal with the different aspects connected to the sample handling and the validation of instrument analysis techniques (Analytical methodology).
To contribute to the general education of future pharmacists on a theoretical and practical level in order to enable them to adopt an analytical approach to work. Teaching is centered on fundamental problems and those encountered in the analysis of medicines (Life cycle of analytical methods). To encourage an analytical and critical approach to work.
To teach students how to analyze scientific publications in the analytical field and how to highlight rapidly the relevant and useful information.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Preparatory chemistry for the biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences.
Physical and mathematical bases of biomedical sciences.
Introduction to Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theoretical teaching and seminars are supplemented by practical work: 56 hours. These ones enable to familiarize the students with quantification methods and characterization approaches of pharmaceutical raw materials and synthetic intermediates. Moreover, instrumental practical work is also organized in order to better understand some technical aspects broached during the theoretical lessons. All notes are available on the platform eCampus. The student will also use this platform to submit their results obtained during the practical work. For the titrimetric determination, the student will have to submit only one numerical data at the end of the practical work on the platform. This increase of the difficulty level is applied in continuation with the introduction in practical work in Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry. Regarding the instrumental practical work, a report template will be available on Ecampus. The completed report will have to be submitted on the platform to be corrected. The mean note obtained for the manipulations represents 50% of the final note of the practical work. Two interrogations including exercises related with the practical work will be organized. Collective corrections will be organized for each of them in the amphitheater. The mean of both represents 25% of the final note of the practical work. Finally, a written exam on the subject matter of the practical work including the obligatory prerequisites (Q4) is organized. It represents 25% of the final note of the practical work.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face or distance learning according to the health recommendations related to COVID-19. Classes take place during the first term (Q5). Time: see the schedule on CELCAT.

Additional information:

Theoretical work: Exam (using eCampus platform) on the subject defined by the professor and scientific staff. 
Oral resit (first session only) in case of an insufficient score at the written exam.
The oral resit is subject to prior registration. Rejection criterion oral exam: too serious deficiency at the written exam.

Practical work: The note obtained for the manipulations represents 50% of the final note of the practical work. Two interrogations including exercises related with the practical work will be organized and the mean of both represents 25% of the final note of the practical work Finally, a written exam is on the subject matter of the practical work including the obligatory prerequisites (Q4) is organized. It represents 25% of the final note of the practical work. The marks from the Practical Work are included in the final mark.
Reminder: Attendance at practical work is mandatory. Consequently, in conformity with article 40 of the general exam rules, a level of absenteeism that is too high may result in students being prohibited from sitting the exam.
 

Work placement(s)

Training possibilities. Student-teachers: possibilities are available for students interested in teaching pharmaceutical analytical chemistry. The tasks involve supervising the practical work. Research: outside the course and exam periods (on finishing the 2nd year of the Bachelor in Pharmaceutical Sciences), motivated students may take part in a course in the laboratory (student-researchers). At the end of the course, there is a possibility of doing a PhD in the laboratory.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The assistants are available to answer to the questions of the students but they have to take a appointment by email.
