Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course "History of Science and of Chemistry" will deal with two main topics:

  • General history of sciences and evolution of the ideas from the antiquity to nowadays
  • More specific aspects of the history of chemistry
It will be based on different, easily accessible textbooks.

The historical journey will be done in 5 stages:

1. From prehistory to the end of the ancient world

2. The centuries of alchemy. From scholastics to the beginnings of modern science: From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and the dawn of the Enlightenment (6th century - 17th century)

3. The Birth and Development of Modern Science: From the Dawn of the Enlightenment to the Turn of the 20th Century (1642-1900)

4. The chemical industry: Some examples (19th -20th century)

5. A short journey into the long 20th century. From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st century: scientific and techno-scientific revolutions
