Learning unit contents

This courses aims at helping future materials scientists to implement Sustainabilty in their practice.

This relies on the understanding of Sustainable Development concept, the impact of materials from raw materials extraction to recycling, to promote the systematic consideration of full life cycle instead of specific, technical performances and use phase of objects.

 

The course follows the natural flow of material conception: from the Sustainability context, through conception/fabrication, practical applications and end-of-life of a series of common materials.

After presenting the life cycle thinking, some low-impact alternatives will be explored in several domains such as:

polymers, building materials, packaging, cleaning and personnal care products, materials for energy and envoronment technologies.

The end-of-life of materials will be treated in the specific local context, in an attempt to highlight the existing recycling facilities available in Belgium at the present time.

 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The final objective of this course is that the students can address the following question:

" How can I contribute to the global effort as a scientist?"

 

They will be able to make a materials selection from their origin, their method of fabrication, their environmental impact during use phase and during recycling. 

They will be also able to propose low-impact alternatives with similar performances, or easier recycling at the end-of-life stage.

 

The course really aims at eploiting the scientific competences of students towards a critical analysis of existing -or emerging- technical solutions, in an order to avoid Greenwashing marketing.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Each chapter starts with a context setting and a theoretical approach in classroom.
 
Some subjects will be studied directly by the students trough literature review, documents or data analysis .
 
On site visits will be schedulded in local waste recycling facilities.
 

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

The student shuld attend the theoretical lessons (10) and recycling facilities visits (1/2 day)
Part of the work wil be homework ( literature review, preparation of oral presentation)

Recommended or required readings

the corresponding documents ( powerpoints and real cases documents) will be shared on ecampus platform

 
 
The evaluation will be done based on the quality of oral contrbution of the students, on specific topics decided together with the teacher.
