Learning unit contents

The lecture aims at

- defining what are non-aqueous solvents and their classification based on their properties;
- remembering the basic concepts of interactions between the solvent and the solutes and their involvement in non-aqueous solvents;
- developping the thermodynamic concepts behind the solvation and how theses properties can be determined experimentally (including spectroscopic techniques);
- establishing the correlation between these properties in various non-aqueous solvents.
 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The concepts developed during the lecture will be exemplified by case studies from the literature, including exercices.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The students are expected to have basic knowledge about chemical reactions and chemical thermodynamics as given in the lectures CHIM0739-1-Chimie physique et CHIM9288-1-Spectroscopie et élément de thermodynamique statistique.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The lecture will be divided in 5 lessons of 4 hours each, complemented by a personnal work treating a case study.

The learning activities are given preferentially face-to-face. However, an hybrid lecturing can be considered for students in mobility.

Additional information:

Students will be assessed on the basis of an online exam (MCQ) (50% of the final grade) covering all the concepts covered in the course, and an oral exam (50% of the final grade) covering one application of the transfer concepts. The discussion will be based on a written report (due 1 week before the oral exam) on a concrete case chosen by the student from a list of topics.
