Learning unit contents

The course will address documentary film history from the 1920's to the present and will introduce the students to the technical, aesthetical and political aspects of documentary filmmaking. How to film "reality"? What are the different types of documentary films? How to represent the "other"? To what extend does a documentary film refer to the social and political context of its time? What are the basic ingredients that foster the reading of a film in a "documentary perspective" (Odin)?

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The students will acquire basic knowledge on documentary film history and develop analytical skills (historical and sociocritical) in the field of documentary cinema.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course will be based on the watching and the analysis of documentary films. The analysis will be developped in class in collaboration with the sudents. Each session will end with a q&a on the texts (see "required readings").

One week before each session, a text (required reading) will be made available to students via eCampus. These texts are an integral part of the course material.

The course will be held on Thursdays (Q1) from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Gothot Room (building A1).
