CLIM0007-1  Greenhouse gases - Measures and instruments to mitigate climate change
Duration :  20h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Master in Geographical Sciences, climatology orientation, in-depth approach, 2nd yearPremier quadrimestre2
Holder(s) :  Emmanuel Mahieu
Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  The course is divided into a series of modules addressing the following topics :

CONTEXT

  • Main greenhouse gases (GHG) and their absorptions in the infrared spectrum
  • GHG atmospheric chemistry, sources, sinks and contribution to radiative forcing
  • Global emissions, long-term time series of the GHG; past and present evolutions
  • Tropospheric and stratospheric ozone, production, catalytic cycles involved and trends
  • In situ and remote-sensing measurements of GHG
INTERNATIONAL TOOLS

  • The Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol
  • The Rio Convention and the Kyoto Protocol
  • Need for additional measures and evolution scenarios
  • Implementation of international measures at the Belgian regional level
Course objective :  In the first part of the course, we will review the main greenhouse gases, learn about their past and recent trends, their atmospheric chemistry and destruction pathways as well as their respective contributions to radiative forcing.

In the second section, we will study the international instruments which have been set up to reduce the emissions or ban the production of important greenhouse gases. Possible evolution scenarios will also be examined. Finally, the implementation of the international measures at the Belgian regional level will be discussed.
Prerequisites :  Basis concepts in physics and chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere.
Organization :  Series of 2-3 hour lectures
Written notes :  Electronic documents consisting in lecture slides, scientific papers, synthesis of international assessments (IPCC, WMO...)
Assessment :  Based on an oral exam.
