Learning unit contents
The course "Visual communication (theory and analysis)" offers an introduction to the main theories, approaches and methodologies of the analysis of visual communication. It will successively address 1/ the image as material, support and object of communication, 2/ the languages of the still image (framing, composition, textual components etc.), 3/ the languages of the moving image (editing, etc.), 4/ the catéegories and registers of visual communication as they formalize different reading contracts or promises addressed to the viewer (trace, proof, illustration, simulation etc.).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Although primarily focused on the theory and analysis of visual communication, this course will allow students to master a first palette of enunciative, pragmatic and aesthetic choices that they will necessarily be confronted with in the exercise of their future profession as communicators: which point of view to choose in order to convey which message? which image format to select according to the first target audience? which enunciation marks for which type of reading contract? etc.

Face-to-face (course taught in English).
The course will alternate ex-cathedra presentations, screenings, collaborative sequences of analysis with the students, and case studies. Three sessions will also be devoted to the screening and discussion of practical exercises (framing and editing) carried out by the students.
