Learning unit contents
The course is structured in a general introduction to the different types of impact studies followed the testimony of various practitioners (lawyer, public servant, consultants).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Train to implement an environmental impact assessment:
- by understanding the role of environmental impact assessment in territorial planning conception and decision procedures ;
- by knowing legal references and principles from European and Walloon law;
- by understanding the methodology and structure of environmental impact assessment;
- by learning legal, methodological and technical basis of impact assessment in specific themes presented during the course;
- by being able to define the content of an impact assessment for a specific project, to identify the most relevant impacts, to use specific assessment methods and technics.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basics of landscape plannings.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The teaching is illustrated with examples of projects and environmental impact studies. More specific themes are presented by experts and project managers. This also aims to illustrate the day to day work of a environmental consultant.

Slides (PowerPoint) are available before / during each session. Reference documents, lectures and recommended readings presented during the course.
The evaluation is based on a written exam (60%) and the evaluation of a work in groups of 2 on the biodiversity component of the local impact assessment(40%). This exercise is divided into two phases, firstly the EIA analysis with an analysis grid (10%) and then an analysis of the biological evaluation criteria (30%).
