Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course provides the theoretical elements and the methods required to assess the thermal and energy performance of buildings. It is made of two parts:
- Building physics where the physical processes determining the performance are presented and for which the modelling background is provided
- HVAC systems where the technical solutions in order to create the comfort conditions in function of the activities taking place in the building are presented together with some modelling features
The course includes the following chapters: General introduction; Heat and mass transfer background; Aeraulic and hydraulic aspects; Climatology, Thermal comfort; Calculation of heating an cooling demands; Heating systems; Ventilation systems; Air-conditioning systems; Integration

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will be able to develop a complete solution in order to create the thermal comfort conditions in a building and to assess the enerfy performance of the solution. This capability concerns both residential buildings and office buildings.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Background in thermal and energy processes.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course proposes, in alternance, theoretical lessons to present the concepts and practical sessions (sizing, thermal comfort measurement, evaluation of solutions). It also includes a series of lessons devoted to the use of a numerical simulation program (TRNSYS).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face in classrooms or in computer room (use of the TRNSYS simulation program)

Recommended or required readings

Available notes: Power point presentations of the lessons

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

oral exam

Additional information:

Oral evaluation (30 minutes) starting from the analysis of a real situation (case study, exercise) In-person: without course notes andn with a 30 minutes preparation time.

Criteria: capability to retrieve and use the knowledge provided by the course to handle a problem which may occur in real life.

The final mark (maximum 20 points) is made of the followinf components:

Global Elaboration of the solution to the question: 5 pts

Use of theoretical knowledge: 5 pts

Answers to the questions raised during the discussion: 5 pts

General form of the presentation: 5 pts

Work placement(s)

No work placement

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Course organized during the first semester with 2H or 4h periods, combining theoretical lessons and practical work
