Learning unit contents

In an increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous context, organizations must seek to maximize their impact and the results (financial, environmental and social) they generate, while minimizing the consequences of the internal and external risks they face.

This course focuses on this second objective:

First, it presents the techniques, tools and methodologies used in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) to identify risks, characterize them, measure their criticality and act proactively to mitigate their impact or transfer their consequences;
Secondly, it presents the techniques, tools and methods that enable an organization to become resilient (= able to cope with any undesirable event, whatever its nature) by building a resilient system based on the right safety culture.

Learning takes place through a real case study, in a real context of an organization facing the challenge of rapid environmental change, starting with proactive waste management. Groups of 3 or 4 students will each analyze a different business unit of this organization, active in the world of animal medical research.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Gaining the knowledge and understanding of one of the following fields: performance management systems, resilience engineering and risk management and being able to mobilize them in order to solve concrete management problems or cases
  • Capacity to research autonomously and methodically the information needed to solve a complex, transversal management problem, to perform a rigorous analysis of it and to suggest pertinent solutions
  • Understanding and being capable of using modelization methods in the fields of performance management and risk management when seeking a solution for a concrete management problem
  • Providing concrete solutions to a management problem, integrating a dimension of technology, innovation or production
  • Being capable of professional team work
  • Developing leadership through the group work and through the use of the EFQM Model as a reference for work.
  • Developing a critical sense (arguing)
  • Developing a transversal, global vision
  • Creative conception of solutions
  • Professional capacity for oral and written communication
  • Faced with a management problem, suggesting solutions that are ethical and socially responsible and that respect the principles of good governance

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Prerequisites (basics and principles) :

  • Management accounting
  • Management control
  • Business Modeling, Control & Planning
Warning :
The course is taught in English (individual presentations, works and supports) BUT you must be possibly perfectly fluent in French (active & passive) in order to realize interviews in the organization which is analysed during the course. This ability is considered as acquired by the student and is not verified at the start of the course. However, if not acquired, this may induce a very poor final personal evaluation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

As a group, you will give 2 "Concept and Tool Implementation" presentations:

The first covers the stages of a "typical" integrated risk management process and the tools specific to operational integrated risk management.
The second covers the principles and tools of resilience engineering as applied in the industrial world.

At the same time, the group will put into practice, in a selected organization, the tools, techniques and methodologies seen in the course, in order to

map the internal and external operational and organizational risks it faces
The design of a register of relevant risks enabling this organization to manage its organizational and operational risks, tested on the identification of 3 different complementary risks.
A proposal for an environmental transition strategy to be implemented, in which the risks are fully perceived, measured and mitigated.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning

Additional information:

The course is divided into 3 sessions of 3 hours each. These sessions consist of the presentation and discussion of the various tools used during the course and the follow-up, in the form of debriefings, of the progressive progress of the work in the organization. The schedule and location are available on the official Master Ingénieur de Gestion course schedule website.
The rest of the time will be spent working in the organization being studied.
