Learning unit contents

** Course will be given in English **

. Physical, mechanical, biological properties :
- moisture content, density, hardness;
- strength and stiffness;
- conductivity, combustibility,...
. Wood defects due to growth excess, physical agents, plants or animals and human actions.
. Tree ring analysis, Microdensitometry, theory and practice.
. Macroscopic recognition of temperate and tropical species wood samples.
. "Assessment of strength and stiffness on structural wood, relationships between visual grading, strength measurement and machine stress grading" is partially replaced by the third part (3h) of the lecture INGE0004-2 "Procédés généraux de construction" given by Pr Rondeaux on wood-based structures calculation.
. Seminar (2h) by Pr Jourez

Excursion to the LTB CRA-W in Gembloux, showing the equipment (3h)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The students will develop a knowledge of wood characteristics including properties and defects.
After completing the course the student is expected to assess wood quality by means of suitable techniques such as measurements, grading and other tests
Argue consequences of silviculture options on wood characteristics
Recognize the most common temperate species from a wood sample
Solving several exercises on wood moisture, wood density and mechanical properties of wood

Prerequisite knowledge and skills
