Learning unit contents

The course constitutes an introduction to steel construction and to the design of the main structural elements of a steel structure. It includes the following subjects:

  • Knowledge of the steel material and its fabrication mode
  • Steel constructions safety
  • Plasticity
  • Classification and resistance of steel  cross-sections
  • Design of members subjected to tension
  • Design of members subjected to compression
  • Design of members subjected to bending
  • Design of members subjected to compression and bending
  • Design of connections
 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course and the exercise sessions, the students will be able to design simple steel structural members with idealised support conditions and subjected to one of the following basic loadings: pure tension, pure compression, simple bending and compression-bending. For this purpose, they will be able to check the necessary resistance and stability requirements at ultimate limit state and the displacement limitations at serviceability limit state.Finally they will be able to check the resistance of connectors used in steel construction.

This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.2, II.1, III.2, IV.2, V.1, VI.2, VII.2 of the BSc in engineering.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching and learning strategy:

  • Theory lessons: 26h (attendance is strongly recommended but not mandatory)
  • Exercise sessions: 26h (attendance is MANDATORY)
  • MANDATORY group project consisting in the design of a basic structure.
Exercise sessions are organised during which the concepts taught in the theory lessons are applied. Some exercises will be solved and explained in detail during these sessions while others will be partially or fully solved by the students themselves. The detailed solutions of the exercises treated in the practical sessions will be made available. 

For the group work, a report will have to be handed in at a date to be decided by the teacher. At their request, the students might meet the teacher who has corrected their report to discuss the observed mistakes.

Recommended or required readings

For the theory lessons, the students will be given notes covering the whole course contents.

For the exercise sessions, the students will be given an exercise book in which they can find many solved and unsolved exercises.

Additional information:

At the end of the term, there will be an oral examination focusing mainly on theory, and a written examination of exercises.

For the theory, the emphasis will be on the physical understanding of phenomena rather than on reproducing the content of lecture notes.

The written exam of exercises is open-book.

An oral examination will be organised at the end of the term, as well as a 2 hours long written examination. For the theory examination, the students will be asked to physically understand the phenomena and be able to explain them instead of repeating the notes content.

For the second session, a similar evaluation will be also organised

After the group work, a report will be handed in and evaluated. The obtained marks will be taken into account to compute the course global mark.

This latter activity is inseparable from the teaching unit and considered as compulsory. A student who has not participated in this activity and / or who has not submitted the expected report within the prescribed deadlines or in the prescribed forms will receive a mark "A" (except if a specific justification is provided and accepted by the teacher which will analyse the justificiation with equity).

The final mark for this course will be fixed with the following subdivision:

- 1st session: 20% for the group exercise, 30% for the written exam and 50% for the oral one

- 2nd session: 20% for the group exercise, 30% for the written exam and 50% for the oral one

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Four hours per week (Friday from 13h30 to 18h00) will be devoted, during the whole semester, either to theory or to exercises.
