Learning unit contents

Le cours is divided in 7 chapters.
1. Introduction
2. Climate System
3. Paleoclimate archives
4. Dating methods
5. Climate forcings
6. Evolution of climate over time
7. Introduction of climate modelling and climate predictions

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of the course is to present the climate system and its main forcings and, to define the paleoclimate approach.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

None.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

(a) Various kind of exercices: collect of information from specialised websites, observation and analyse of sedmimentary archives, treatment of data, reading of scientific papers. A personal laptop is recommanded.
(b) Visit of a research laboratory and/or fieldtrip.

Additional information:

Course will be given during the first semester. 8 times 2 x 2 hours par week. Lectures followed by exercices. Room: building B18, Geology. 
Note the participation to the practise part is mandatory. Any absence has to be justified.

Additional information:

Examination will include two parts.
Theory (50 % of final quotation). Individual oral examination (15 minutes + preparation). Comments of figures and/or tables presented during the lectures.
TP (50 % of final quotation).
1. Reading a compulsory article & responding in writing to a questionnaire concerning the article (20%). 
2. Synthesis of a chosen point described in the IPCC report, oral presentation within 3 minutes (15%) and written report (15%).
