Learning unit contents

The students will analyse in a critical manner a real technical report of an existing project. The project could be typically a mining one, but could be also related to rehabilitation of a former industrial site. The students will have as objective to perform a due diligence of the project and will therefore work as an "engineering bureau" with assuring an optimal work strategy. All stages of the mining project duration, from geological prospecting through deposit evaluation and choice of methods for exploitation and mineral processing to site rehabilitation will be considered. Environmental, hydro-geological, financial (cash-flow, CAPEX, OPEX) issues should be addressed and studied in depth.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By attending the course the students will be able to understand and appreciate the main steps and procedures for performing feasibility and due dilligence study of a real mining project.

Working on an existing case study, the students will develop a sence of critical analysis together with a team-working spirit.

The students will be able to apply in an integrative manner the knowledge acquired duirng the different disciplines of their engineering studies.

This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.2, II.1, II.2, III.2, III.3, VI.1, VI.2, VII.1, VII.2, VII.4, VII.5 of the MSc in geological and mining engineering.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The following basic subjects are required as a prerequisite for successful accomplishing the miltidisciplinary project: Geology, Mineral resources, Geotechnics, Mineral processing, Hydrogeology

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The cours consists of -
- introduction session of a mining project (feasibillity study)
- round table discusssions where findings will be presented in a critical manner and works progress is tracked
- final half-day presentation of the overal project findings with questions and answers

Recommended or required readings

A complete file of a mining (or other relevant) project will be made available to the students. The students will be grouped and allocated a various "work packages". One half-day per week during the semester will be dedicated to brainstorming sessions at which progress reports will be followed by the academic coordinator. The academic staff members responsible for each project part will be present during a mid-term report presentation. All kind of reference materials relative to the various parts of the project will be on students disposition right from the beginning. Software packages will be made available, e.g. USIMPAC, geomodelling tools

Additional information:

A final report written in English will be demanded by each group of students. An oral presentation likewise in English will have to accompany the report. The final note will be formed as a mean one from the written report and oral presentation.
