Learning unit contents

This course contains 4 chapters:

1. Definitions

2. The color of minerals 

3. Identification methods in gemology

4. Descriptionof gem minerals and their occurrences

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of this course, is to teach to future geologists the basics of gemology.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The basics of Mineralogy have to be known (levels BAC1, BAC2 and BAC3).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Practicals of gemmology (use of refractometer, measurement of density, ...).

Visits of museums (Curtius, Treasure of the Cathedral).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning


Additional information:

Face-to-face learning. Practicals are obligatory.

Some chapters may be managed via podcasts.

Recommended or required readings

The complete written course is available via the link bellow.

Oral examination for theory. An analytical report, concerning a mineralogical sample, may be asked to evaluate the practicals.
