Learning unit contents

Survey of the evolution of literary genres and study of the major authors and cultural currents in Dutch literature from 1700 to 1880.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Introduction to the history of Dutch literature in the 18th and 19th century. Improvement of the students' literary and cultural competences, and of their understanding of the mechanisms of literary evolution and historiography. Developing the students' analytical skills. Developing the students' skills to assimilate academic presentations and texts in Dutch.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good command of spoken and written Dutch.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Reading of representative text fragments and discussion of significant images. Autonomous reading of two Dutch-language novels.
