| Irish, English or World classics? Three cases studies.
This course will focus on three highly canonical texts written by Dublin-born authors who have variously been claimed by World, English and Irish literature. After a general introduction to Anglo-Irish literature and to theoretical problems inherent in its definitions, English and Irish contexts respectively, and the conflicts that these different readings can generate. We will also examine the strategies through which the authors themselves aimed their texts at various potential audiences, and the possible continuities that run through Anglo-Irish classics that belong to very different periods and genres. |
