Learning unit contents :
This activity aims mainly at offering first-year students a first contact with the reality of economic and business world.
It takes place in complementarity and support of the diverse courses provided to these students in their business education and enables them to relate their studies to the real world. This course is organized in complementary with other courses and is supposed to illustrate some of them. Length: 30 hours - 5 conferences (10h) - Home work (preparation of conferences (pre-readings, preparation of questions for the speakers, etc.) - Team work (video presenting a company and its management, by group of 8 students) (15h)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit :
Consistent with the ILO's composing the bachelor degree, through this transversal activity, students will be able:
-to become more familiar to the objectives and roles of organizations (from the public, private and non-profit sectors)
- to discover concretely products and services provided by these organizations
- to become aware of, and better understand the different jobs relating to business
-to discover the different (management) functions in an organization
-to have an overview of the socio-economic panorama and the industrial world in Wallonia and Belgium - to really meet a CEO, an entrepreneur and to physically visit a company.
At the end of this course, students will thus be able to better understand the reality of a company (and its management) thanks to several testimonials and thanks to a physical visit in a company.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The learning process can be divided into three main methods: - Participation to conferences made my practitioners (CEO, experts) - Compulsory pre-readings to prepare each conference (question for each speaker) - Teamwork (visit of a company and realization of a video) The compulsory readings aim at enlarging the general knowledge of students regarding some specific kind of enterprises (like big firms, social firms, public firms, etc.). Clear references to the conferences and to the pre-readings have to be made in the teamwork (video) and a part of the written exam will consider them too.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The courses is organized into two main parts:
1. On the one hand, this activity structures around a cycle of conferences, by different key actors from the economic and business world. We will invite in particular former students of HEC-ULg, in order that the students can identify themselves to the invited individuals.
Through the presentations of managers and with various supports (videos, demonstrations of products or services, documentation, websites...), the students will discover the organizations, their products and services, and will better understand the diverse jobs relating to business.
2. On the other had, students will be asked to realize, by group of 8 students, a video on a company.
Content of the video:
- General presentation of the company and of the various (management) fonctions in it
- Via a (physical) visit in the company: Interviews of key actors and specific observations
Recommended or required readings :
The students are expected to take notes during the conferences and a series of compulsory pre-readings will be available before each conference.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation comprises two parts:
1. The team work (video) represents 60% of the final grade and will be evaluated according to criteria such as:  - Respect of the instructions (time, content) - Analysis exhaustiveness - Link with the content of the 5 conferences - Originality  - Form (sound, image, professionalism). 
2. An written exam (based on the content of the conferences and of the pre-readings) will be organized in June. This exam represents 40% of the final grade
The presence in class and the active preparation of each conference is compulsory.

The details concerning the conferences (dates, presenters, targeted audience) as well as the instructions for the team work (content, detailed list with the evaluation criteria, etc.) will be announced soon (on New Lola).
