Learning unit contents

Psychosocial factors at work, health and company interventions for the promotion of health at work (Partim Annalisa Casini)
This course proposes to analyse the links between a number of psychosocial factors at work (occupational stress, globalisation, restructuring, relocation, moral harassment, aggressiveness/violence), workers' health and the proper functioning of enterprises. The relationship between the various psychosocial dimensions and health will be approached according to the gender and social inequalities in health analysis grid. Belgian and European epidemiological data will be used to show the extent of the problem. Finally, we will take stock of recent developments in occupational health promotion programmes. The course will end with a group exercise during which students will be led to think and carry out the real project of an intervention in a company.
The effects of discrimination in the world of work (Partim Annalisa Casini)
Certain groups such as women, immigrants, disabled people, etc. are discriminated against in the world of work. This course will deal with the processes that lead to discrimination and its effects on the workers who are the target of discrimination. It will also address the strategies that workers spontaneously put in place in an attempt to maintain a comfortable self-esteem and mental health, as well as the role of field actions and public policies in the fight against discrimination.
Management of psychological traumas in professional situations (Partim Isabelle Hansez with the collaboration of Adélaïde Blavier and Caroline Dendoncker)
The prevention counsellor can intervene in the management of psychological trauma experienced in a professional setting. Rapid treatment of victims would prevent the development of severe post-traumatic stress disorder. No profession is immune from a potentially traumatic incident at work. The legislation indicates that the employer must have an internal emergency plan to limit or reduce post-traumatic stress (R.D. of April 10, 2014, art.74). This day will help define the notion of critical event while addressing the impact it can have. The different methodologies for dealing with traumatic events will be considered. Illustrations based on concrete cases will be provided by Caroline Dendoncker, coordinator for more than 15 years of a regional Medical-Psychological Emergency Unit triggered in the event of a collective event with a strong traumatic impact (France). As a clinical psychologist, she created a Psycho-Trauma Consultation and provided immediate, post-immediate and delayed care for many trauma victims in various contexts (work accidents, road accidents, attacks, etc.).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Through presenting the theoretical and empirical aspects of the connection between work and well-being, this course aims at equipping students with a good understanding of the concepts and the necessary skills for their application and critical apprehension.  The course brings students to analysing the working conditions influencing occupatioal health through identifying relevant psychological and psychosocial processes, and proposes some tools for remediation. Various specific situations will be considered from the epidemiological, clinical and social angle.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Teaching in the second quarter, examination in June
Depending on the measures related to the health crisis:
Psychosocial factors at work, health and company interventions for the promotion of health at work (Partim Annalisa Casini) The course is organised at a distance and synchronously.
The effects of discrimination in the world of work (Partim Annalisa Casini) The course is organised at a distance and synchronously.
Management of psychological trauma in a professional situation (Partim Isabelle Hansez with the collaboration of Adélaïde Blavier and Caroline Dendoncker) The course is organised at a distance and synchronously.

Recommended or required readings

Compulsory and optional readings will be communicated by the teachers during the course.

In order to avoid multiple assessments for this course and the overload that this may cause for students, assessment will be carried out as follows: Only one part of the course will be marked on the basis of a written examination (individual work). This academic year, this is the part given by Isabelle Hansez and collaborators.
For the other parts of the course, active participation in the course serves as evaluation. No additional work will therefore be required for students who are present and active. In case of absence (even if motivated), the student, on his/her own initiative, will contact the teacher to find out how he/she will be assessed. This remedial test will give rise to a "pass" or "fail" result. In the case of a "pass", the numerical mark obtained in the written exam will be validated. In the event of a "failure" in the re-take exam, the mark obtained in the written exam will not be validated.
This will be a written evaluation. The practical details of the evaluation will be communicated during the course.
August session: Written group work according to the instructions given during the course.
