The course addresses the strategic dimension of HRM systems in modern organizations through the lens of organizational behavior concepts and perspectives. Indeed, organizational behavior has become a central field of study that looks at how individuals, groups, and organization behave. In today's business landscape, understanding organizational behavior is pivotal for effectively navigating within organizations and managing diverse teams. Organizational behavior plays a central role in the strategy, effectiveness, and performance of organizations and thus represents a critical requirement in managing organizations.

The course aims at introducing students to the major HRM functions and to the main principles of organizational behavior dimensions that underlie these functions and their relationships with organizational performance and strategy.

The course uniquely offers students with key concepts to better understand the psychological and group-level mechanisms that explain the adequacy of HRM systems and the effectiveness and performance of an organization. Consequently, the course is particularly related to GEST3054-2 "Analyse des organisations"

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

cquiThe intended objective outcomes (ILO) of the course are:

  • Understand the key concepts of organizational behavior and their related theories
  • Critically compare and analyze the different theories in organizational behavior and strategic human resource management;
  • Analyze real-life situations and identify the relevant key concepts and theories;
  • Apply a research-based approach to modern organizations and HRM through problematization, hypothesis generation, data collection, and data analysis and discussion;
  • Design and implement effective solutions to real-life situations based on a scientific approach
  • Communicate one's point of view and confront it with others.

Learning activities are organized around:

Additional information:

The evaluation of the course is composed of two distinct assessment methods:

Group work (/6)

Groups of 5-6 students will conduct a group assignment focusing on one specific HR challenge that will be identified through an interview with an HR manager or director. Students will analyze the HR challenge through organizational behavior and strategic human resource management concepts covered in class and individual reading. Students will be evaluated through an in-class presentation at the end of the semester.

Exam in session (/14)

An individual MCQ and open-ended questions exam will be conducted during the exam session and will assess students' understanding of organizational behavior concepts and theory.

For the second/third session, the evaluation will only consist of an individual MCQ and open-ended questions exam.
