Learning unit contents

The curriculum in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine comprises English language courses, which aim to give students a thorough passive command of written and spoken English in the field of veterinary medicine.

The purpose of the first-year course is :

(1) to enable students to revise general English (CEFRL levels B1-B1+ for listening, B2 for reading) and, (2) to introduce the basic vocabulary of veterinary medicine in semi-autonomy (i.e. through guided self-learning).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The first-year English course is a levelling course which aims to revise the elements of general English and to introduce the scientific vocabulary.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of general English grammar and vocabulary (A2 or B1 level).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

On top of the self-learning tasks based on a schedule posted online, the students will do four self-assessment tests for which they will receive a detailed online feedback and which will be corrected in class.

Additional information:

This course is a blended course. It consists of:

- six online modules with guided and supervised self-learning units,

- six grammar revision chapters with exercises and keys,

- two online grammar progress tests,

- six listening comprehension tests on eCampus,

- four comprehensive self-assessment tests (with detailed online feedback),

- four lectures with additional explanations and exercises.

All tests and exercises are compulsory.

(2) the ISLV Basic English Grammar book and/or the ISLV Interactive Grammar Website (GABi) on eCampus

(3) The course book which contains the veterinary English articles of the e-campus modules, a self-study grammar course with exercises (and key online), and the vocabulary of the course

Additional information:

Two grammar progress tests and five listening comprehension tests to be done online.

Four self-assessment tests (reading comprehension and English in use MCTs of intermediate - B1/B2 levels) with detailed feedback from September to December.

Written exam in January on the modules, vocabulary and grammar taught in the first quarter. The exam consists of reading comprehension, vocabulary and English in use MCTs.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

In-person lectures will be organised in two groups based on the preceding online test grades. They consist of grammatical and vocabulary explanations and practical exercises. Each lecture is followed by aconsolidation quiz on eCammpus.
