Learning unit contents

English for Biomedical Sciences (LANG4001-1) continues to develop the following skills/elements: reading; data gathering; oral interventions; writing;  listening comprehension of scientific lectures as introduced in English for medical sciences (LANG2002-1).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • enable students to read and understand the literature of their field written in English more easily and efficiently.

  • enable students to understand short videos in English dealing with information specific to their field.

  • enable  students to briefly debate the issues introduced in the coursebook through texts and videos and through their own information research.

  • develop students' ability to provide short answers to open questions based on reading and listening comprehension activities in their field.

  • develop students' ability to spot, summarize and paraphrase relevant information in English in their field.

  • familiarize students with the specific terminology of academic research in English.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

English for Medical Sciences (LANG2002-1 or LANG2940) or equivalent (e.g. IELTS 5.5-6 or Cambridge Advanced English A- C).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course features in-class sessions where the students' active participation is required (through discussions and listening and reading comprehension activities) complemented with additional online modules (enhancing grammar skills among others).

Additional information:

The course is taught in groups; class attendance is compulsory. 
The additional online learning modules are prepared at home following a schedule posted on eCampus. Regular and continuous work is required both in class and on eCampus.

Additional information:

Written exam in May/June. Second session in August/September.

Multiple choice and short answer questionnaire (IELTS 6.0 level MCQ+SAQ) based on a medical article, vocabulary and grammatical points revised throughout the year -both in class and online- and an audio file. The exam also includes a writing section.

Students must demonstrate the ability to fully understand an article from a scientific journal and specific information presented orally (through global and detailed understanding), as well as their knowledge of the stylistic features of academic English and of the vocabulary and grammar highlighted both in class and online. They will also be required to write a descritpion and a comment of content.
