Learning unit contents

The theoretical part covers the following subjects : the papyrus in antiquity, documentary papyrology, the history of papyrology, working tools, scripts on papyrus, the language of papyri, chronology and metrology, the typology of documents, and methods of publication.
The practical part is conducted in parallel with the theory : reading, and commenting Greek and Latin papyrus documents.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course aims at enabling anyone who has followed it to use a Greek or Latin papyrus document for the preparation of a paper, a lecture, a course, etc. It also aims to give a general idea of Egypt under Greek, Roman and Byzantine rule.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The knowledge of Greek and Latin is not required, but the student must be able to read Greek words (knowledge of Greek alphabet).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Each student prepares the commentary on a papyrus with his exam in mind. With this aim he carries out research in libraries and on Internet.
