Learning unit contents
This learning, theorical and practical, is turned towards the study of Greek syntax and accentuation. A first initiation in the translation from French into Greek is proposed. Morphology and vocabulary are studied more closely. Initiation in Greek metrics.
The course is divided into two parts :
30 h first semester (Gabriel Nocchi Macedo) : study of Greek accentuation and revision of Greek morphology.
60 h during all the year (Koen Vanhaegendoren) : Greek syntax, translations from Greek into French and from French into Greek.
Two private readings : one prose text (sem. 1 - Gabriel Nocchi Macedo) and one poetry text (sem. 2 - Koen Vanhaegendoren). Private reading in the first semester will be Lysias' For the Invalid (XXIV) whereas the reading in the second semester will be taken from the Anthologia Palatina, VII, 136-152, 163-188 and 217-224 (with metrical reading).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The goal of the learning is the command of Greek morphology, syntax, accentuation and vocabulary.

Knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Exercises, translation from Greek into French and from French into Greek. Tests during the year about the vocabulary, accentuation, morphology and syntax of ancient Greek.

We will use the Paris edition by Pierre Waltz for the private reading from the Anthologia Palatina, VII, 136-152, 163-188 and 217-224 (p. 113-119, 123-136 et 149-153). It is available on eCampus. I highly recommend reading the Budé introduction, p. 22-47.

Additional information:
Tests during the year, written and oral examination at the end of the academic year, with private reading.
January (Gabriel Nocchi Macedo): written exam of accentuation and morphology (70 %) and oral exam on the first private reading (30 %).
June (Koen Vanhaegendoren): prose composition (40 %), translation from Greek into French (40 %) and oral exam on the second private reading (20 %).
The mark of the midterm exam in January will count for 35% of the June final mark if > or = 10/20. The mark will have no effect on the final grade if it doesn't reach 10/20 and the final exam will then be cumulative.
