Learning unit contents
The theoretical part of this course consists in the linguistic description of the phonological, morphological and syntactic systmes of Classical Latin. The study of phonology and morphology is based on a critical reading of various linguistic descriptions. The description of the syntactic structures of Classical Latin (cases syntax, subordinate clauses syntax) is based on the study of grammatical models (memorization and active knowledge of those models are required) and on the reading of texts from the beginning of the imperial period.
The course may also include an introduction to the archaïc, vulgar and late Latin.
The practical part of this course is dedicated to exercises on the language (morphological and syntactic analysis exercises, translations, proses, various exercises in lexicography and syntax). The students prepare by themselves the reading, the translation and the grammatical commentary of the text mentioned above, but this homework is completed by exercises during the course.
New vocabulary lists have to be memorized.
Scientific papers in the field of the synchronic or diachronic description of the Latin language have to be red, summarized and criticized.
Tests are distributed all over the year, to allow the student to assess his progress and the work still needed.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
In the end of the course, the students must have acquired:
1. a perfect command of the lexicon and the Latin language structures in order to allow an easy reading of the Classical Latin prose-writers, the translation of Classical texts and the imitation or literary prose;
2. a perfect knowledge of the main phonological, morphological and syntactic phenomena;
3. the ability to apply to Latin the methods of a functional linguistic description.

Tuesday and Thursday throughout the year.
Learning methods : lectures, exercises during the course and\or to prepare at home, translations and proses during the course and\or to prepare at home, translation and grammatical commentary of the text mentioned above to prepare at home, personal research on phonological and morphological questions (with correction during the course), reviews (written and oral) of papers.

Written examination, version and oral examination at the end of the year.
The mark of the midterm exam in January (written and oral) will count for 25% of the June final mark.
