Learning unit contents
Philological analysis of various specific issues related to Latin texts, as well as to Latin diachronic and synchronic linguistics. The course will use all the resources of contemporary philology (computer and statistical tools, linguistic and stylistic approaches, etc.).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, students will have the methodological skills to analyze the specific philological issues discussed and will be familiar with the use of various research instruments in the fields of philology, linguistics and stylistics of Latin. They will also improve their knowledge of the language, their practice of version and theme, as well as their expertise in translation and philological commentary of Latin authors.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Knowledge of Latin acquired at the end of the Baccalaureate cycle in ancient languages and literature, classical orientation or in ancient and modern languages and literature.
Prerequisites :
- active knowledge of the entire morphology of classical Latin and the vocabulary contained in reference books and documents (vocabulary lists available on e-Campus, vocabulary included in G. ETIENNE, Cahier de vocabulaire latin, 20th edition, Liège, 2011);
- ability to describe and explain all linguistic structures illustrated by the grammatical models in the list available on e-Campus as well as by the reference grammars (A.-M. BOXUS - M. LAVENCY, Clauis, Grammaire latine pour la lecture des auteurs, Nouvelle édition, with the collaboration of D. Longrée and G. Schouppe, Louvain-la-Neuve, 2014; G. FRANCOIS,Grammaire latine, Liège, 2nd edition, 1976; M. LAVENCY, Vsus. Grammaire latine. Description du latin classique en vue de la lecture des auteurs, 1st ed., Louvain-la-Neuve, 1985).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course will include: - personal work (written work, presentation of lessons, reading and/or review of articles, study of a glossary and grammatical models) and exercises (themes, versions, text restitution, overall comprehension, etc.) - the reading of a Latin work.
