Course contents :  
The course will consist of close readings of a sample of short stories by women writers working in English, among whom Shauna Singh Baldwin, Angela Carter, Anita Desai, Janet Frame, Katherine Mansfield, Alice Munro.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Enhance the students' ability to understand and interpret literary texts of whatever denomination, and to provide written analyses in the form of articulate essays in English.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
The course is entirely taught in English.

Recommended or required readings :  
Apart from the short stories (which will be circulated in class), the student must read two novels (chosen from a list which will be made available; see below).
Assessment methods and criteria :  
A written and an oral exam will be organized in May/June and in August September, 2012. The written exam will consist of an analysis of a short story, while the oral exam will take the form of a commentary on two novels (of the student's free choice) read in the light of the relevant secondary literature.

The course is organized in the second term.
