Learning unit contents

This course explores the notions of "norm(s)" and "variation(s)" - two key notions in sociolinguistics - in the context of the history of the Dutch language. 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

1) General understanding of linguistic change and changes to the Dutch language in particular. 2) Ability to use specialised literature in a critical manner, with the aim of deepening the student's knowledge in this field.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Understanding of spoken and written Dutch. If required, this course can be linked to other curriculum courses: Preceded by: History of the Dutch language (BAC 2)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Critical reading of articles from scientific journals - oral presentation of a critical reading report.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Timetable and session: 30 hour - 2nd quarter.

A written assignment will be asked for at the end of the class. The paper will be presented to the other students during a "mini workshop" (june).
