Learning unit contents
Depending on the year, the course is devoted to the study and in-depth explanation of the work of an author from the period in question, or of a text/series of texts in the langue d'oïl, enabling a comparative study based on a narrative or rhetorical motif, a character or type, a cultural environment, a theme...
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The main aims of the course are as follows:
- to have an in-depth knowledge of the texts studied
- be able to interpret a text written in Old French in a precise way by relating it to its different contexts (literary, cultural, historical, media, etc.);
- to understand the importance of this practice in establishing a critical text;
- conversely, understand the need to have a well-established text in order to be able to interpret it correctly.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Work on texts on the basis of a syllabus and/or an anthology.
Research activities in the ULiège libraries ; use of databases and other online resources.
As well as taking an active part in the theory course, students will be expected to get involved outside the lessons (in particular to prepare the extracts studied in the following lessons).
Students will be required to prepare a piece of written work, either individually or in a group (arrangements to be defined during the term), the subject of which will be defined in consultation with the lecturer. At least one supervision session will be organised during the term.

Additional information:
The evaluation consists of two parts, assessed on a weighted basis:
- an oral examination on the content of the course (70%);
- a written assignment (30%), the subject and assessment criteria of which will be discussed during the year.
[The possibility of an out-of-session examination depends on the possibility (to be decided during the term) of presenting the written work (or its progress, depending on the lesson timetable) to the class.]
