Learning unit contents

Study of several topics concerning the interplay between Spanish language (and its varieties), the cultures and the societies linked to Spanish speakers and/or of Hispanic heritage.

This year's seminar topic: Cultural perspectives on dialectal variation in Spanish

The course will address the following topics, among others:

  • Introducción (I): la lengua española como recurso y práctica cultural
  • Introducción (II): La variación del español (peninsular, canario y americano)
  • El español como lengua policéntrica. Norma(s) y prestigio lingüístico
  • La transmisión cultural: el español como lengua materna/de herencia
  • Las tensiones lingüísticas: lenguas minorizadas vs. lengua dominante
  • El español y las ideologías etnolingüísticas
  • Cortesía verbal: variación dialectal y cultural
  • Variación y expresión de género
  • El registro oral en el arte y la literatura
  • Migración, repertorios y prácticas plurilingües

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

In-depth understanding of the phenomena of dialectal variation in Spanish, reflecting socio-cultural nuances.

The development of the ability to analyze and identify these phenomena.

Linguistic skills in spoken Spanish equal to the C1 level of the CEFRL.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Level B2+ in Spanish.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Class meetings will concern essentially theoretical material, but they will often deal with practical matters, including active class discussion and group work on exercises.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face to face.
Tis course will be taught in Spanish.

A detailed reading plan will be provided at the beginning of the term.

- Phonological correction and consistency - Clarity and organization of the presentation - Use and understandig of the linguistic notions. - Extent of knowledge.
