Course contents :
This course has been designed as an introduction to the literary strategies specific to writers from sub-Saharan Africa, writing in French. It assumes an interest in the literary work as and of itself and a good basic understanding of French literature.
The course consists of a general presentation of the historical, sociological and cultural conditions which have enabled the emergence of a body of French literature in the sub-Saharan African countries from the first third of the 20th century (first part).
It includes a study of the components of the founding movement of Negritude through the choice of poems of three of its principal authors: Léopold Sédar Senghor, Léon Gondron Damas and Aimé Césaire (second part).
Finally, it will address the evolution of literary strategies of writers since the time of Negritude, to the post-colonial or post-modern era from a few representative books.
The 2015-2016 course will address the following questions in particular:

  • Emerging African literature - Négritude and Francophony;
  • The works of Léopold Sédar Senghor, Aimé Césaire and Léon Damas;
  • An outline of the sociolinguistic situations in black Africa and the Francophony of the South;
  • French in contact; the oral tradition and written literature;
Learning outcomes of the course :
The aim of the course is to initiate participants in the literary expression of African cultures (and more broadly from the South) in the French language and in the sociological processes that govern the forms of legitimation of a type of literature in the position of postcolonial-type cultural domination.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills :
To make the most of this course, students must have a good general knowledge of the history of 20th century French literature. Class attendance is compulsory.

In-depth reading of the poems of Léopold Sédar Senghor. Reading and report on a novel (according to list)

Assessment methods and criteria :
The oral assessment concerns all the material covered in class. The written piece of work, which students must submit before the end of the course, is part of the overall assessment and goes towards the final grade.
