| NEUR0431-1 | Introduction to neurosciences

| Duration : | 15h Th |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Thierry Grisar |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Course contents :
| This course is an overview of the cellular and molecular basic mechanisms that sustain the physiology of the nervous sytems. It explains, with an evolutionnary point of view, how the human brain can be considered to day as the most accomplished living tissue in its complexity and, accordingly, the most performant. Clinical applications that can be illustrated from the exposed notions will be also presented. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| During this course, the following chapters will be presented : Chapter 1 : A general description of the cellular components of the nervous systems underlying the importance of the neuron-glia relationships. Chapter 2 : The neuronal cytoskeleton and the axonal transport. Chapter 3 : Some neurobiological elements of brain development. Chapter 4 : The properties of the axon and the myelin. Chapter 5 : The ionic channels. Chapter 6 : Some principles of neuronal electrophysiology. Chapter 7 : The synaptic transmission. Chapter 8 : The networks in the mammalian cerebral cortex. Chapter 9 : The motor unit. Chapter 10 : The neuronal plasticity, injury and death. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Previous training in general biology is recommended. The students will profit from the courses of general physiology and biochemistry scheduled during the same period. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| None |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Eight magistral two hours weekly lessons during the third quadrimester. |
Recommended or required readings :
| A syllabus will be available with the material to be learned with various colored illustrations, at the editions of our university. |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| The evaluation will be identical to that of the course of general physiology and will be held on the same time(shared cotation). |
Organizational remarks :
| 2 The text of the syllabus, the icongraphy of the course and the oral presentations will be available on the so called respectiv "student portail" of the Ulg. During this first teaching course period however, this will be achieved step by step up to the end of november 2007.
2 it is possible that the above described method of evaluation will be modified. |
