Learning unit contents

The PESU17 course serves as a framework for the instructional design, implementation, test, evaluation, and scientific reporting of a pedagogical improvement brought to the course you worked on during the first term (PESU16).
At the end of the PESU17 course, you will be able to:
- distinguish the different sections of a scientific article in the field of pedagogy (knowledge); - operate a pedagogical change in your courses (know-how); - to gather and analyze data in order to find out if your pedagogical change has had the required effects (know-how); - to communicate this pedagogical change in an adequate language and in a way that, in formal terms, echoes scientific communication (know-how); - to consider your teaching as a subject of study and an interesting object of transformation (attitude).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Formasup targets the development of 5 skills (CREER model), in tandem with your specific teaching context. These are :
Designing coherent educational settings;
Implementing the systems designed (resources, tools, technologies...);
Teaching/ managing/ supporting learning;
Assessing students' learning and giving them feedback;
Monitoring the quality of teaching by means of a documented reflective practice.
The PESU 17 course activates all the skills to various degrees but contributes more particularly to the development of the "adjustment" skill. "A documented reflective practice" involves an effort to a) substantiate, by means of data gathering, the effects of one's teaching, and b) to situate this reflection in the context of pedagogical literature.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Being focused on the monitoring and adjustment of your teaching practice and, in addition, on the gathering of quantitative and qualitative data in a course you are responsible for, the PESU 17 course imposes the prerequisite of being involved in a teaching activity at the time of attending this course.
You must also have carried out successfully the PESU 16 course.
Finally, you must have a reliable and fast internet connection because some preparation work is done online.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The face-to-face sessions (or their online equivalent) analyze, in a systematic way, the organization of a scientific article so that the participants can model their approach on this structure in their own investigative efforts, in their data-gathering, results analysis, and editing work.
The adoption of such a scientific approach in the area of teaching and learning is fostered by 3 categories of activity:
1. By means of presentations, discussions and exercises, you become familiar with the tools and techniques for the gathering and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data. This data is directly linked to a reflection on the elements of your teaching whose efficiency you question in terms of the learning process of the students and the climate in which this takes place. You document your investigations and analyses with the help of the suggested pedagogical models. You collect your data in class and submit it for the critical appreciation of the teachers and other participants of Formasup.
2. You carry out regular individual productions for which you receive feedback (collective or individual) on the part of the teachers. This feedback enables you, where necessary, to improve your work. The activities to be carried out are explained during the face-to-face sessions or their online equivalent.
Through all these activities, PESU 17 attempts to familiarize participants with the pedagogical literature. Participants are regularly required to work on examples of published articles.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

If you follow the blended course (face-to-face sessions and eLearning):
. You will attend some sessions which take place on Tuesdays from 13:30 to 17:00. These sessions, limited in number, are completed by regular individualised tutoring which supports the completion of your project.
. You will avail of a learning space which includes activity files, references, resources as well as communication tools.
. An active and regular commitment on your part is required: you will commit to completing the required work by complying with the instructions and deadlines given to you.
If you follow the full-eLearning course:
. You have regular contact with your tutor by means of adapted communication tools.
. You will avail of an online learning space which includes activity files, references, and resources as well as communication tools.
. A regular and active commitment on your part is required: you commit to completing the suggested activities in compliance with the instructions and deadlines given.
In both formats (blended, full-eLearning), the face-to-face sessions or their online equivalents are prolonged by an individual tutoring which bears on the design and implementation of the adjustment as well as on the editing of the article which reporting on it.

Recommended or required readings

The online Formasup learning space is updated regularly and publishes the documents used during lectures (notes, PowerPoint presentations, articles...) as well as referenced reading.

Assessment methods and criteria

. The assessment of the PESU17 course consists of writing an article on the transformation brought to the course. In order to do this, you implement an adjustment of your teaching and gather objective and subjective data from your students in order to measure the effect of this change on various dimensions of the learning experience. The monitoring of the change, carried out in a context of rigorous questioning of your teaching practices, is reported in the article in such a way that you demonstrate that you have benefitted from the theoretical references that have been worked on during the pedagogical activities, discussions and reading materials.
 . Your coursework in worth 25% of your final Formasup mark (that is to say, 25 marks out of 2100). The minimum pass mark is 10/20.
. The assessment for this course is organised during the June session. You must submit your adjustment article on the date given to you. The adjustment article is annexed to your portfolio.

Work placement(s)

The academic programme does not involve any practicum as such. However, the exercises for gathering and analyzing data directly linked to your daily teaching practice and its improvement can be considered as a particular form of practicum in your own class and in the presence of your students!
