Learning unit contents

This course is an introduction to the physics of materials at the microscopic scale. On the one hand, it introduces some basic concepts from solid state physics (Bloch theorem, electronic dispersion curves, phonon dispersion curves, density of states, effective mass, hole, ...). On the other hand, it uses these concepts  to describe the properties of the main classes of materials (metals, semiconductors, insulators). The emphasis will be placed on the description of some specific properties (specific heat, transport, ferroelectricity, phase transitions) and of their use in some paractical applications (electronic devices like diodes and transistors, sensors, actuators, data storage ...).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The goal of this course is to initiate the students to the microscopic aspects of the physics of materials and to give them the basic knowledge allowing them to understand the mechanisms exploited in various electronic devices.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic concepts in cristallography, quantum mechanics and statistical physics (cfr. "prérequis" et "co-requis" as defined in the official program).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The oral course will content 15 modules of 2 hours and will be completed by sessions of exercises (10x 2 hours). Few tutorials on Jupyer Notebook will also be organized, in order to help assimilating the new concepts through various illustrations.
