Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

In this course, we teach the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics. Basic notions are explained and illustrated with exemplative cases.

More precisely, the course is structured along 6 chapters :
1. Particles and waves : Introduction to fundamental ideas of quantum mechanics
2. The Mathematical bases of quantum mechanics
3. The Quantum mechanics postulates
4. The harmonic oscillator
5. The angular momenta
6. The Hydrogen atom

Exercice learning activities are scheduled to illustrate all theoretical notions covered by the 10 chapters. Content of these additional learning activities : wave packets and 1D diffusion problems, 2 level system, perturbation theory, Zeeman effect.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

To understand to fundamental laws of quantum mechanics and what makes it different from classical mechanics.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Prerequisite
Algebra
Analysis
Electromagnetism
Modern Physics

Corequisite
Analytical Mechanics II

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching method is the ex cathedra mode. The essential of the course is presented with use of video data slides, completed with the use of the blackboard for the technical developments.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face.

Recommended or required readings

The copy of all slides displayed during the lessons are available online.

The well-known book of Quantum Mechanics, I and II, by C. Cohen-Tannoudji, B. Diu and F. Laloë (Hermann and Wiley-Vch, Paris, 2005), is a recommended reading.

Exam(s) in session
