Learning unit contents

This course presents the main learning disorders that can be encountered in the school setting. This course will review developmental language disorder (DLD), written language learning disorders (dyslexia-dysorthographia), mathematics learning disorders (MLD), developmental coordination disorder (DCD). The course will also focus on demonstrating how attentional and executive processes, different memory systems and metacognition contribute to learning and, in case of deficits, to the emergence of disorders. 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course sequence, the student will be familiar with the main learning disorders that constitute the most frequent complaints in school settings. He/she will be able to recognize the characteristics of disorders presented by children with learning difficulties, identify the explanatory factors and understand the cognitive and environmental mechanisms which contributes to the emergence of disorders. 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

None

Nevertheless, the student is expected to master the general concepts of the course PSYC5872-1-Neuropsychology

This course is based primarily on ex cathedra lectures with examples, audio-visual sequences and discussions
