The ALS course: management of cardiac arrest in adults, before, during and after
This is a 2-day course, labeled ERC and therefore non-modifiable, which makes it possible to obtain a certificate lasting 3 years, with on-line recertification modules, theoretical then practical (4 hours) in a recognized course center, and finally a recertifying face-to-face module.
This course is given by ERC approved trainers (and/or in training), in teams of 2 (or 3) most often from ULiège, our partner CHU or external partners. Trainers can come from all over Europe.
The students (or participants) are divided into "colored" groups of up to 6 and follow various theoretical but above all practical workshops which explore the whole issue of cardiac arrest in adults, its etiologies, its prevention, its care and certain arrhythmias that can contribute to the destabilization of a patient.
This is a dynamic, progressive course with feedback, based on team simulation
It is aimed primarily at health professionals who have or will have to manage cardiac arrest and are included in various specialization masters
In addition, participants from other health disciplines can complete the groups.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, each student will be able to:
- perform good quality chest compressions
- carry out efficient ventilations and check it
- carry out an evaluation of the patient using the ABCDE technique
- know how to manage the airway non-invasively and when to consider an invasive management, by who, and the need of CO2 monitoring
- understand the value of ultrasound and its use in peri-arrest situations
- to know and apply the basics of teamwork and in particular non-technical skills
- to manage a standardized case of a patient with cardiac arrest
- know the risks of deterioration of a hospitalized patient
- correctly prepare a patient after successful resuscitation
- know how to interpret a 7-step electrocardiogram quickly (not completely)
- know the principles of blood gas analysis, in 5 steps
- to pass on relevant information to another team on the principle of i-SBAR

Additional information:
a pre-test (QCM) is available online (e-learning on CoSy). It will allow you to evaluate yourself. This pre-test is not used for your assessment
it is a multimodal evaluation:
- 2 workshops are evaluative: the BLS and the management of the airway
- an ongoing assessment of the ability to carry out the ABCDE
- a theoretical evaluation based on 120 items of a QCM (0/+1), 1 hour of maximum test
- a practical evaluation during a workshop (SIM-TEST) reproducing a standardized cardiac arrest (10 minutes maximum test), with a trainer who will do everything you ask him (but will not take any initiative)
all of your assessment data is then reviewed by a jury (faculty) consisting of trainers and a Course Director (recognized ERC). Your final result (and your online certificate) will be known to you at the end of the course.
remediation (re-test) is possible immediately after the failure of the practical examination; A re-test of the QCM is possible within a year in case of failure. You may also be offered a new full session if certain criteria are not acquired.
You may be offered to become a training instructor, in which case and if you accept it, additional training (GIC, cf. ERC) will be required.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
you do not have to register on the ERC website to apply for an ALS course if you are part of one of the specialisation masters concerned
you will be notified directly by email of your enrollee in a course session by the course center
the simulation centre (CARE simulation: www.caresimulation.uliege.be) is a course centre recognised by the ERC and the courses are provided there most of the time (see however with the anesthesia secretariat for some trainings)
