Learning unit contents

Flowering is a crucial step in plant development: its success conditions reproduction of individuals and survival of a species. The mechanisms by which flowering time is regulated and flowers are formed are better understood since forward genetics screens. Major breakthroughs were made in the weed Arabidopsis thaliana but translating knowledge allows fast progress on crops. The course thus starts with the state of the art in Arabidopsis. The students thereafter choose a topic to explore other species or go further on a particular aspect of flowering. This personal work is tutored by the teacher and aims at writing a kind of 'research proposal'.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim is to provide knowledge on an important chapter of Plant Development to PhD student, whatever their own research topic. Since flowering is the expertise of C. Périlleux's lab, the PhD students will also meet the lab members and have the opportunity to interact with them. This will allow to discuss theoritical and technical aspects of plant science research.

Techniques of molecular biology.

Learning activities include lectures, lab meetings, and witing a research proposal.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Teaching methods depend on how many students attend. A few lectures will be given for providing basic knowledge on flowering. Then the students will chose a personal topic of interest to go further, and will be tutored during their investigation. The personal work can be done at home, but meetings will be scheduled regularly.

The evaluation will be based on the personal report of the student.
