Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course includes the following topics: the different parts of the XRay fluorescence spectrometer (XRay tube, spectrometer, detectors); interactions between XRay and matter; matrix effects and their corrections; sample preparation.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course aims at providing a basic knowledge for the quantitative analysis of major and trace elements in geological samples.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Reference is being made to chemistry and geochemistry.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

During the practical labs, the students will learn how to prepare geological samples and analyze them with the XRay spectrometer.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

5h of lectures and 15h of preparation in the lab.

Recommended or required readings

Reference book: Potts L.W. (1987). Quantitative analysis : theory and practice.

The oral examination will include questions about theory and labs.
