Learning unit contents

The course is an introduction to the key theories and concepts in the sociology of immigration and integration (assimilation, citizenshi, culture, ethnicity, interculturalism, racism, transnationalism, asylum, migration)

At the end of the course, the student should be able to use these concepts to analyse social situations

MODE OF DELIVERY: FACE-TO-FACE. Attendance is highly recommended. The course consists in about 10 sessions (2 hours each) plus the complusory participation in a few lectures organized by CEDEM


Powerpoint and documentary ressources will be made available online on eCampus and My ULg. The podcast of the course will be uploaded on Teams for the first time in 2022

In the event of pandemic-related restrictions, the first session exam :

Assessment will take place online through eCampus . A pre-test in the form of a mock exam will take place beforehand.

The exam tab will appear in the left column. It will consist of 10 multiple choice questions (0/+1) and an essay topic. It is possible to save your essay via a text editor or to upload it in PDF format. In case of doubt, it is recommended to send a backup copy to hassan.bousetta@uliege.be before the end of the exam.

For the dissertation, particular attention will be paid to the student's ability to practice epistemological rupture and to extricate him/herself from preconceptions and common sense. The student will have to problematize sociologically the questions at the center of the course from the analysis of a situation in the recent news in connection with migrations, citizenship and intercultural relations.
