Learning unit contents
This course will focus on the study of migration and related issues through the lens of gender and intersectionality. The aim is to train students to systematically adopt an approach to these issues that pays attention to the gender and intersectional dynamics at play. In doing so, they will be able to analyse how experiences of migration differ according to individuals' social positions (claimed or assigned), how migration influences gender dynamics and their reconfiguration, and the reverse - how gender dynamics influence migration paths.
The course will include introductory lessons on what gender and intersectionality mean for social science research. The focus will then shift to the study of gender and intersectional dynamics operating within migration patterns, also addressing specific themes.
The course content will be based on a body of literature and a methodological approach crossing different fields of social sciences.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, students will be able to identify and apply the theoretical and methodological tools needed to understand migration issues from a gender and intersectional perspective. Students will have been made aware of these approaches and will be equipped to use them in their future research or professional practice.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Since the course is taught in English, the knowledge of both oral and written English is necessary.

The course consists of lectures, group and individual practical exercises, and group discussions.

Face-to-face; compulsory readings and active participation in class; practical activity. Students who are unable to attend the course, especially for work reasons, are requested to contact the teacher. If the number of students enrolled is less than 10, the course can be organised differently.

Readings will be indicated during the course and available via MyULiège. Some of these readings are compulsory and necessary for class discussions.

The assessment is based on all the following elements
- Active presence in class: completion of exercises, preparation of readings, presentations and participation in group discussions, etc. (5 points)
- Completion and presentation of an empirical work/poster (5 points)
- Exam: preparation of a reading grid of a book of choice related to the topics studied and oral presentation of the contents (10 points)

The course takes place on Thursdays from 11 am to 1 pm in the second semester.
